John Snyder, The Sly

John Snyder's paintings are loved by many people.
His circle of motifs is apparently simple: again and again he paints Woodstock and its many guests and regulars. Several of the figures are recognisable. And in the same way he paints other beloved locations in the City.
Snyder's world is apparently a "crooked" world, sour and hallucinated. Nothing could be more wrong.

Across from Woodstock is Electric Ladyland. John Snyder painted a mega-sized picture on this building many years ago (and it is still there).
The picture is a tribute to and a reproduction of one of the world-famous graphic artist Escher's works. Anyone from the 60s knows Escher's pictures: fish that turn into birds, devils that turn into angels. Up is down and down is up.

John Snyder took his starting point in the mathematically inspired universe - but then created his own unmistakable and deeply original orchestration of cafe woodstock from the extreme edge.
