INVITATION TO THE OCTOBER EXHIBITION / STADENS MUSEUM FOR ART LOPPEBYGNING MIDDLE: WELCOME!

Essential Furniture Objects
Per Schandorff creates unique furniture objects from found wood. It is wood marked by sun, wind and water that
reminds us of nature's beauty and transience. His current exhibition can be seen as a contribution to an
ecological aesthetic.
At the large, rustic exhibition venue in Christiania, the Danish artist and designer Per
Schandorff presents at the Essential Furniture Objects exhibition a number of completely new works that he has created over
the last year.
These are works or objects, as he himself calls them, that formally place themselves between design, art and
craftsmanship. Most objects are made of wood found in nature, which has been affected by sun, wind and
water over time. It has given them incredible beauty; shiny, debarked, frayed and pitted. In a reading of
the form and expression of these often very old pieces of wood, Per Schandorff processes them into sculptural furniture-like
objects. The material quality and history of the wood is emphasized by the fact that he, for example, sanding, oiling or burning
the surface of the wood. In the processing process, their function and expression arise and Per Schandorff adds them, for example. legs
or hooks in metals such as brass and steel, so that they appear, for example, as unique tables - or as 'hangers'.
Some of the objects can therefore easily have a function, but they also function as aesthetically beautiful and
pure art objects that you can enjoy in your home or business.

An ecological aesthetic
The objects in the exhibition can be seen as part of an 'ecological aesthetic', as physical objects that
satisfy our need to surround ourselves with aesthetic beauty, while at the same time relating to
nature's resources.
The objects consciously make use of the beauty that can lie in the decayed and rotten wood – or as in
some other objects 'knots without end' of old rubber, which is also weathered. With nature's
decomposition processes as the actual shaper of the objects, there is an immediate appeal to something
basic in our senses, which can open us to the awareness of the way we live, where man's
intense consumption and advanced life systems push the planet's biological state to the limit.
The objects in the exhibition are, in addition to being aesthetic expressions, thus also a tool to tell about
essential conditions in our lives and the state of the planet, including asking questions about what is basically
necessary for our existence and what actually gives us inner satisfaction in life. Per Schandorff's
works help us to sharpen our awareness of the time of life and our connection with nature's
finely balanced biological symbiosis.
